Horticultural Therapy

In 1990, U.S. Census Data indicated that 22.5% of Union County's then 322,277 residents reported having one or more disabilities.  Having perceived the need for programs to meet the cognitive, psychological, physical, and social needs of people in rehabilitation centers, nursing care facilities and senior housing programs, volunteer Master Gardeners and Union County Agricultural Agent Madeline Flahive DiNardo created the eight-session Introduction to Horticultural Therapy (IHT) program   Since 1988, our IHT Program has been offered at 57 sites, reaching more than 1,625 children and adults with special needs.  Agencies have incorporated horticultural activities into both curriculum and activity schedules, and have planted community and accessible gardens as a result of this program.

Helpline

The Master Gardeners of Union County offer home gardeners extensive, research-based information on many horticultural topics. Rutgers-trained Master Gardener volunteers handle questions from the public through the Master Gardener Helpline.  Helpline staff can answer questions, diagnose plant pest and disease problems, and identify plants and insects.  Support is available in person at the Helpline offices in Westfield, by phone and by email.  CLICK HERE for location and hours.
